Tribute to a friend and leader

Updated: Jul 10, 2020

Lieutenant General Elvin R. Heiberg III
Lt. Gen. Vald Heiberg

Lt. Gen. Vald Heiberg was more than just a wonderful colleague here at Dawson. He was also one of the great leaders of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. During his 35 years in the Army, Vald rose through the ranks to become Chief of Civil Works for the U.S. Army, Deputy Commander and then Commander of the Corps of Engineers – the youngest Commander since Gen. Joseph Totten in 1838.

After retiring from the Army, Vald was a leader here, providing more than a decade of inspired client service. He passed away in 2013.

We mention Vald because last weekend, at the Army’s annual Castle Ball saluting the Corps of Engineers, the “Engineer of the Year” Award named after Vald went to a thoroughly deserving recipient. Justin McDonald is the Senior Engineering Technical Lead for Civil Works at the Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile District. He leads a skilled engineering team in the planning and design of water resource projects across the region. Justin has more than 16 years experience in civil engineering and construction contract management.

Dawson & Associates was proud to be a sponsor of this year’s Castle Ball, as we’ve sponsored the event for many years.  It is a wonderful tribute to the men and women in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Congratulations to everyone there. It was a privilege to be a part of this great event.
