Among the many great Army Corps of Engineers leaders who have been part of Dawson & Associates, Lt. Gen. (Ret) Elvin "Vald" Heiberg III, West Point class of 1953, is one of the greatest.
Vald, who passed away in 2013, joined Dawson at our founding in 1997 and stayed with us until his passing. Like everything else he did, Vald's client service was insightful and first rate.
However, Vald wasn’t the first Army officer in his family. Vald’s grandfather Elvin Ralph Heiberg, West Point class of 1892, died during WWI at the Austro-Italian front. And Vald’s father, Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Elvin R. Heiberg, West Point class of 1926, was a professor of mechanical engineering and then the department head amongst many other challenging assignments throughout his Army career.

In honor of Vald’s father, Brig Gen. Heiberg, after his passing, West Point established the Brig. Gen. Elvin R. Heiberg Memorial Award given to the cadet with the highest composite standing in applied science and engineering.
This month, we heard from Vald's son Elvin Heiberg IV who traveled to West Point to present his grandfather's award. This year's winner was Cadet Tyler Semon from Cherry Hill, NJ.
All of us at Dawson & Associates congratulate Tyler on this achievement and wish him well.
This award also reminds us how Vald Heiberg, his father, and his grandfather always stood out among their peers through their intellect, selfless service and leadership.
The Heibergs were remarkable soldiers, scholars and statesmen whom we still miss. Fortunately, their legacy lives on in Cadet Semon.
