Congratulations to our colleague Alex Beehler, the new Assistant Secretary of the Army (Installations, Energy and Environment). In this new position, he is responsible for policy and oversight of sustainability and environmental initiatives; resource management including design, military construction, operations and maintenance; Base Realignment and Closure; privatization of Army real estate; and installations safety and occupational health.
Our colleagues Bob Dawson and Jon Deason joined Alex at his Pentagon swearing-in ceremony.
During his confirmation hearing, Alex faced tough questions on groundwater contamination at Army installations caused by toxic PFAS chemicals and military housing problems that recently have come under Congressional and media scrutiny.
Alex previously served as Assistant Deputy Under Secretary of Defense (Environment, Safety and Occupational Health) from 2004 to 2009, where he oversaw cleanup at active and closing bases, compliance with environmental laws, conservation of natural and cultural resources, pollution prevention, environmental technology, fire protection, safety and explosive safety, and pest management and disease control for Defense activities worldwide.
In addition, Alex served in the Department of Justice as a senior trial attorney for environmental enforcement and at the Environmental Protection Agency as a special assistant for legal and enforcement counsel.
He is a member of the District of Columbia, State of Maryland and Commonwealth of Virginia bar associations. He received a bachelor’s degree from Princeton in public and international affairs and a law degree from University of Virginia.
