As Chief of Engineers, Hank commanded more than 40,000 personnel and supervised more than $13 billion in annual programs. His term was notable for his successful efforts to strengthen project management, develop a more comprehensive environmental ethic and improve efforts at partnering with industry and customers. This success also reflects his efforts to expand the Corps’ use of alternative dispute resolution.

Hank’s service in the Army included service as Director of the Corps’ Civil Works (water resources) Program, Engineer for the Army in Europe, Commander of the Corps’ Pacific Ocean Division, Commander of the 2nd Infantry Division Support Command in Korea, Commander of the Corps’ Nashville District, and Commander of the 326th Engineer Battalion of the 101st Airborne Division in Viet Nam.

After retiring from the Army, Hank was Chief Operating Officer of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and President and CEO of Fluor Daniel Hanford. He led Fluor’s $9 billion Department of Energy contract for hazardous waste cleanup at the Hanford nuclear site in Washington State.

An active volunteer, Hank has served on two boards of the National Research Council (NRC), the operating arm of the National Academies of Engineering and Science. These are The Board on Army Science and Technology and The Board on Infrastructure and the Constructed Environment. He also is active with the American Association of Engineering Societies (AAES).
