Biography

As Director of the Office of Environmental Policy and Compliance at the Department of the Interior (1989-1994), Dr. Jonathan Deason oversaw the environmental compliance programs of the Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Land Management, Minerals Management Service, Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement, and six other bureaus.

During his 28-year federal career, he also served as Manager of the Interior Department’s National Irrigation Water Quality Program and was a Senior Policy Advisor in Interior’s Office of Water Policy.

Since 1996, he has been Professor and Director of the Environmental and Energy Management Program at the George Washington University.

Dr. Deason spent 30 years as a reserve officer in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, including six years as Chief of Staff (Reserve).

He holds a Ph.D. degree in environmental systems engineering from the University of Virginia, an M.S. degree in environmental engineering from the Johns Hopkins University, an M.B.A. degree from Golden Gate University and a B.S. degree from the U.S. Military Academy.
