Biography

During nearly two decades in the U.S. Congress, the Honorable Sonny Callahan (AL) earned bipartisan respect for his mastery of the Congressional appropriations process.

Rep. Callahan was first elected to Congress in 1984 after 12 years in the Alabama State House and Senate.  He served on the House Energy and Commerce Committee for several years and in 1995, was appointed to the House Appropriations Committee and rapidly earned a reputation for expertise in the complex Congressional appropriations process.

Shortly after joining the committee, Rep. Callahan was appointed Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Foreign Operations, a position he held until 2000. During the six years he chaired the committee, Congressman Callahan worked to help America’s allies and protect America's global interests.

In 2000, he became the Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development. In this critical position, Rep. Callahan oversaw funding for all civil projects of the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers as well as portions of the Department of the Interior, the Department of Energy and a number of independent agencies. During the next two years, he earned bipartisan praise for the way he forged a national water rights and development appropriations strategy.

In 2002, after 30 years of public service, Sonny Callahan retired from Congress.
